Years of practice leave their mark.
In the way a dancer holds a line.
The control behind a movement.
The placement of a hand.
The strength required to make something difficult appear effortless.
I photograph dancers, performers and people whose practice lives in the body.
These portraits are about movement, but they are also about what remains when the movement stops.
The body remembers what it has learned.
Dance and movement can be powerful without being loud.
I use light, timing and careful direction to isolate the shape of the body and the gesture within the movement.
Some portraits hold a fraction of a second.
Others are made almost completely still.
Both can say something about the years of work behind them.
Movement passes. The photograph holds it.
Movement in light
There is another side to this work.
Movement in Light uses a white background, softer tones, shadow and space to make photographs that feel very different from my black-background work.
The body becomes line, shape and sometimes almost abstraction.
