Father & Child Portraits

Father & Child Photographer Johannesburg

A portrait session for fathers, children and generations

You do not need to know how to pose.

Your child does not need to perform for the camera.

And you do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want.

My job is to photograph the relationship between you as it is now.

That might be a father with a young child, a dad with his teenage son or daughter, an adult child with their father, siblings with their dad, or several generations together.

The session takes place in my Johannesburg studio, where I guide you throughout.

There is time to settle in.

There is time to make portraits together and separately.

And there is time for the small things that often become the photographs you keep — the way a child reaches for a father’s hand, a familiar laugh, an arm around a shoulder, or the way you stand beside one another when nobody is trying too hard.

You simply need to arrive.

What happens in the studio

Before your session, we will talk about who is being photographed and what you would like from the portraits.

I will also help you with clothing and anything else you need to prepare.

During the session, I direct the posing, hands, body position and where to look. You are not expected to know what to do in front of the camera.

We will photograph different combinations where appropriate, as well as individual portraits if you would like them.

With younger children there may be more movement and play.

With older children, the photographs may be quieter.

There is no particular way a father and child are supposed to look together.

The photographs should feel like the two of you.

What to wear

Simple clothing photographs best in my studio.

Black is always a good choice against my black background. Neutral colours can work beautifully too.

You do not need to match. Clothing should work together without becoming the subject of the photograph.

Avoid large logos, strong patterns and fluorescent colours.

I will help you before the session, so you do not have to work this out alone.

What to wear for your portrait session

More than one child or generation

Absolutely.

A father & child session does not have to mean only two people.

You may bring more than one child, and grandfathers are welcome too.

We can photograph everyone together and make photographs of the different relationships within the family — father and daughter, father and son, siblings with their dad, grandfather and grandchild, and individual portraits.

We decide what matters before we begin.

The fathers who are missing from photographs

Fathers are often there for all of it.

Carrying the bags.

Fixing the bicycle.

Teaching the skill.

Standing on the side of the sports field.

Driving there and back.

Simply getting on with the work of being a father.

And yet, when families look back through their photographs, fathers can be surprisingly absent.

Sometimes they were behind the camera.

Sometimes nobody thought to make the photograph.

A father can be part of every ordinary day and still be missing from its photographic record.

Absolutely. Father & child refers to the relationship, not the age or gender of the child. Sons, daughters or both are welcome.
Yes. Father & child portraits are not only for young children. The relationship continues to change as children grow, and there is no age at which it becomes too late to photograph it.
Yes. Three-generation portraits are very welcome.
Most people are. You will be directed throughout, so you do not need any experience in front of a camera.
No. Particularly with younger children, I would much rather work with who they are than spend the session trying to make them sit perfectly still.
No. I would much rather your clothing worked together than matched. I will help you with this before the session.
