Why have a portrait taken?
Most people don’t think they need a portrait.
They have photos.
They have phones.
They have images everywhere.
And yet, very few people have a photograph made deliberately of themselves or the people they love.
Not a quick capture.
Not something taken in passing.
A portrait.
A portrait is different
Most photographs record what was happening.
Where you were.
Who was there.
What everyone looked like.
A portrait asks us to stop for a moment.
To make a photograph deliberately.
I have long believed that one portrait can matter more than a hundred photographs taken in passing.
Not because you need fewer photographs.
Because sometimes one is enough.
There are moments that do not return
We often understand the value of a photograph afterwards.
When something has changed.
When someone is no longer here.
When the child in the photograph has grown up.
When we look at ourselves and realise how much time has passed.
There does not need to be a milestone.
You do not need to wait for a birthday, anniversary or important event.
Sometimes the reason is simply that this is how your family looks now.
This is how your children are now.
This is how you are now.
My why
Every portrait I create begins here — with my son.
The portraits that shaped me were not elaborate. They were personal.
They held time, change and the astonishment of watching someone you love grow.
Becoming a mother changed how I see the world.
It taught me that what feels ordinary while we are living it can become invaluable once it has passed.
Over time, I understood that these photographs were not only about him.
They were also about me — about what I was learning to notice and what I could no longer bear to lose.
That understanding reaches further back.
To my father.
To my mother.
To the people who shaped my life and the photographs that remain.
This is why I photograph.
One Moment. One Portrait. Forever
You do not need to wait
You do not need to lose weight first.
You do not need to feel comfortable in front of a camera.
Your children do not need to reach the right age.
Your family does not need to be perfect.
A portrait does not require any of those things.
It only requires deciding that now is worth keeping.
What remains
The photographs we make now become something different with time.
They are framed and lived with.
Put into books.
Given to children.
Found again years later.
Their value is rarely greatest on the day they are made.
It grows with the life that follows them.
The portrait was never meant to live on a screen. It was meant to live with you.
