Childhood has not quite disappeared.
Something else has begun.
They are changing.
Finding their own tastes.
Their own opinions.
Their own way of being seen.
Some are confident.
Some would rather be almost anywhere else.
Most are somewhere between the two.
They are not who they were. Not yet who they will be.
I have photographed teenagers in my Johannesburg studio for more than two decades.
Black backgrounds, careful light and very little around them keep the attention on the person.
There is no need to perform for the camera.
No need to look older, cooler or more certain than they are.
I want the person who is here now.
Sometimes something comes into the portrait with them.
A guitar.
A skateboard.
A dog.
The clothes they wear constantly.
These are not props.
They are simply part of who they are now.
Brothers, sisters and friends can be part of the portraits too.
They are part of the portrait because they are part of the person.
Teenagers do not need to know how to pose.
They do not need to arrive confident or even particularly keen to be photographed.
I will guide them throughout and give them time to settle in.
