There is something distinct about the relationship between a mother and her son.
It begins in complete closeness. A child held against the body. A face turned instinctively towards hers. A hand reaching up without hesitation.
Then, slowly, it changes.
Boys grow. They become louder, taller, more independent, more themselves. And yet the connection does not disappear. It simply takes new form — in laughter, in trust, in the quiet familiarity of being known for a lifetime.
This portfolio is a study of that relationship as I see it.
These mother and son portraits are not built around trends, props, or performance. They are shaped by gesture, expression, proximity, and the emotional line that still exists between them, whether I am photographing a toddler, a schoolboy, a teenager, or a grown son standing beside his mother as an equal.
Photographed in my Johannesburg studio with simplicity and intention, these portraits allow the relationship to lead. The black background, careful light, and minimal composition are not there to decorate the frame. They are there to remove distraction, so that what remains is presence, tenderness, humour, protection, and recognition.
Some images are quiet.
Some are playful.
Some carry the unmistakable shift that comes with time.
Together, they form a body of work about love that matures without losing its origin.
This collection is especially close to me, because the thread began with my own son. What started as something personal became a way of seeing mothers and sons more clearly — not as a fixed stage, but as a relationship that keeps evolving while holding onto its emotional core.
These are the portraits that remind us that growing up does not end the bond.
It reveals it differently.
