What to wear for your maternity photoshoot
Looking elegant, comfortable, and authentically you
Choosing what to wear for your maternity photoshoot does not need to feel overwhelming. The right clothing should flatter your shape, photograph beautifully, and allow you to feel like yourself.
The best maternity portraits are rarely about fashion for its own sake. They are about choosing a wardrobe that supports light, form, emotion, and the way you want to remember this chapter.

Why wardrobe matters in maternity portraits
What you wear influences far more than appearance. Clothing affects how the bump is defined, how the body is shaped by light, and how timeless the final portraits feel.
In my studio, the most successful maternity wardrobe choices are usually the ones that support the emotion of the portrait rather than compete with it. Simplicity often photographs more powerfully than excess.
Classic and elegant wardrobe choices
These options tend to create refined, sculptural maternity portraits with a strong sense of form and quiet elegance.
Form-fitting dress
A long, fitted dress in a solid tone such as black, white, blush, or a soft neutral gently defines the bump and creates clean, elegant lines.
Tulle gown
Tulle adds softness, movement, and a fine-art quality that works beautifully in studio portraiture. It can feel romantic without becoming overly decorative.
Sheer lace robe
Lace introduces texture and delicacy while still allowing the shape of the bump to remain central.
Silk slip dress
Simple and understated, silk drapes beautifully and creates a modern, timeless feel.
Black turtleneck dress
This remains one of my favourite options for minimalist maternity portraits. It is sculptural, striking, and especially beautiful in black and white.

Casual and relaxed options
Not every maternity portrait needs to feel formal. Some of the most moving images come from a wardrobe that feels natural, intimate, and emotionally grounded.
Button-up shirt
An oversized white shirt, especially one borrowed from your partner, can feel personal, relaxed, and quietly intimate.
Regular jeans with a fitted top
Classic jeans worn low beneath the bump, paired with a simple fitted top, create a contemporary look that feels confident and unfussy.
Maxi dress
A soft maxi dress can be flattering, comfortable, and ideal for gentle movement.
Knitted sweater dress
For winter maternity portraits, a knitted dress can add warmth, texture, and softness without losing elegance.
Tank top with leggings
This is a clean, understated option for portraits that lean more relaxed and modern.

What to avoid
Some clothing choices can distract from the portrait rather than support it.
It is usually best to avoid:
logos and obvious branding
busy patterns
reflective fabrics
heavy textures that pull attention away from the face and bump
The simpler the styling, the more space there is for connection and expression.
Bold and statement styling
For clients drawn to colour or a stronger visual impact, a bold wardrobe can work beautifully when used with restraint.
This might include:
jewel-toned gowns such as emerald, sapphire, or burgundy
a fabric or texture with more presence
stronger contrast against black or white backgrounds
The key is balance. A stronger styling choice usually works best when the rest of the portrait remains clean and considered.

Artistic and creative styling
Some maternity sessions lean more toward an expressive, fine-art feel. In those cases, the wardrobe can become part of the visual language of the portrait.
Sheer fabric draping
Soft, draped fabric interacts beautifully with light and can create elegant movement around the body.
Body paint or henna
When thoughtfully done, these can turn the bump into something deeply personal and visually distinctive.
Statement jewellery with a bare bump
A single bold piece, especially one with cultural or personal significance, can create a powerful portrait without overwhelming it.
Boho-inspired looks
Layered textures, flowing fabrics, and natural elements can work well when kept refined rather than overstyled.
Silhouette-friendly styling
Fitted clothing often works best for backlit portraits, where the outline of the bump becomes the focus.

Minimalist and timeless styling
Some of the strongest maternity portraits come from the simplest wardrobe. Monochrome dressing, all-black styling, or clean neutral tones often create images that feel more enduring because they keep the focus on form, emotion, and presence rather than trend.
Timeless maternity portraits are usually built on restraint.

Final thoughts
Your maternity wardrobe should reflect who you are, while also supporting the kind of portrait you want to create. Whether your style feels refined, relaxed, bold, or more artistic, the best choices are usually the ones that feel both flattering and honest.
If you are unsure what to wear, I will guide you before the session so that the styling feels aligned with both your comfort and the final look you want.
