What To Wear As A Professional

What to wear FOR YOUR headshots

When preparing for a headshot as a professional, it's important to project professionalism, competence and approachability.

Here are some tips on what to wear for your headshot.

MEN

  • Suit: Choose a well-fitted, classic suit in a neutral colour such as navy, dark grey, charcoal or black. Avoid overly bright or flashy colours, which can distract from your face.
  • Shirt: Choose a crisp, light-coloured buttoned shirt. Light blue is a soft alternative that still looks professional. Fine checks also work. If your shirts are tired and worn, purchase new ones.
  • Tie: If you wear ties, choose a conservative tie in a solid colour or a simple pattern. Avoid overly bold or novelty ties, which can distract from your professional demeanour.
  • Grooming: Ensure your hair is clean and neatly styled. Your facial hair, if any, should be well groomed—either a clean shave or a trimmed beard. Your nails must also be clean and neat.

WOMEN

  • Suit or Blazer: Wear a well-fitted blazer or suit jacket in a neutral colour like black, dark navy or charcoal paired with a skirt or trousers for a cohesive look.
  • Blouse: Choose a simple, elegant, neutral, light-coloured blouse. Avoid bright colours or complex patterns that can be distracting. If you don't like your arms, cover them. Long or three-quarter sleeves work best.
  • Accessories: Keep jewellery minimal and understated; simple stud earrings or a small necklace can complement your outfit without overshadowing it.
  • Grooming: Style your hair the way you typically wear it. Stick to natural makeup to enhance your features; avoid bold choices. Nails should be well-manicured in subtle or neutral tones.

TIPS

  • Fit and Comfort: Ensure your clothes fit well and you feel comfortable. Avoid anything too tight or loose that might look unflattering on camera.
  • Simplicity: Adopt a "less is more" approach. Keep your outfit simple and professional to keep the focus on you.
  • Colours: Choose neutral colours, which are universally flattering and convey a professional image. Contrary to what many say, all black and all white is a classic, timeless look.
  • Layering: Layers work well for headshots, but be strategic. Lighter colours or patterns should be underneath darker ones.
  • Logos: Avoid logos of any kind unless required by your company.
  • Wrinkle-Free: Your clothing should be clean and wrinkle-free. Please don't wear your outfit to your session. Instead, bring it on hangers and change into it to maintain a polished look.
  • Glasses: If you wear glasses, ensure they are clean and non-reflective.

Following these guidelines can ensure that your headshot presents you as a credible and trustworthy professional. The next step is finding the right headshot photographer.
